There are a growing number of responsible travelers who are donating time, talent, and economic support to protect (and perhaps improve) the destinations they visit. This growing movement is called "travelers’ philanthropy."
Since 2002, Sustainable Travel International (STI) has collaborated with GlobalGiving to offer more than 500 pre-screened travelers' philanthropy projects around the world. To achieve our objectives, we work with dedicated, tenacious individuals who are driving significant, positive changes. From supporting community development and biodiversity conservation, to providing educational and professional training opportunities, these people are do-gooders to the core.
In a nutshell, we connect these hard-working, dedicated, "good-idea" people with you and help projects of all sizes receive donations of all sizes. Here’s how it works…
How It Works
- Project Leaders post their causes and details about what they need on our website - giving you an inside look at the project's unique needs and work being done.
- You browse the website, research causes by topic or location, and pick the one that matches your interests and passions.
- You make a donation (tax-deductible for U.S.-based donors) and we combine your donation with those from other generous folks doing the same thing.
- We ensure that your donation is on-the-ground within 60 days and that it has an immediate impact.
- Please note that we keep administrative costs down to a bare minimum, and that 90% of the revenue generated goes directly to the project itself.
If you're not satisfied with your donation for any reason, the GlobalGiving Guarantee gives your money back in the form of a voucher for the amount of your original donation.
Find a project and choose your way to change the world.
How Can I List a Project on Green.travel?
Projects are referred to STI through our network of supporters and travelers (like you). We vet projects for eligibility, check references, and project goals and outcomes. If you're interested in submitting a project for our consideration, please contact us.
Why Travelers' Philanthropy?
- Government budgets and international aid is decreasing in some developed and many undeveloped countries, increasing the need for individual donations.
- Protecting the environmental and socio-cultural needs of host countries strengthens relationships and improves business.
- Participatory philanthropy gives travelers a much more rich, personal, and authentic experience than traditional travel.
The Importance of Travelers Giving Back
More than 500 million people travel for leisure each year, and the desire to travel is accelerating as remote corners of the world become increasingly accessible. With that increased access, however, come new challenges.
Among the most severe environmental effects of travel are pollution, intensified or unsustainable land use, depletion of natural resources, and alteration of ecosystems.
Host communities can also be adversely affected. Loss of indigenous identity and values, competition for resources, cultural deterioration, and land-use disputes are among the many challenges host communities face.
